MAGINE TRAFFIC ON OUR ROADS getting
even worse! The latest proposals for easing
Riverside’s traffic woes seems designed to
worsen Laguna’s traffic.

Recently, Orange County and Riverside County planners have begun
backing a proposed tunnel system under the Cleveland National Forest
as a new connection between the two counties. The proposed tunnel
would start at Interstate 15 and Cajalco Road in Riverside County, then
go under the Santa Ana Mountains before surfacing in Orange County.
The road would cross Santiago Canyon Road and end just east of Irvine
where the Laguna Freeway meets the Foothill Toll road.

I am very concerned that this proposal is a gun pointed straight at
Laguna Beach. In fact, some of the early literature is promising residents
of Corona a simple way to get to Laguna. I recently brought this to the
attention of the City Council and was appointed to a sub-committee, with
council member Pearson, to monitor this project and ensure that all
potential traffic impacts are completely addressed and minimized. I will
keep you informed on this issue and will continue to work to protect our
circulation system.

For additional information on this tunnel, you can go to their
website, http://www.tritunnelexpress.com.

ORE PARKING and building the long
awaited Village Entrance Project are the
aims of moving the city maintenance
facilities to the Act V lot.

We need to provide more parking for residents and visitors close
to the downtown and near the art festivals. To accomplish this
task, we must free up the space currently occupied by the City’s
maintenance yard.

This is the plan originally suggested by the Village Entrance Task
Force in 1995 as the optimum solution to providing close-in
parking and allowing for the best possible use of the land for the
Village Entrance project. I am working with other city council
members to make this long suggested project a reality.

LUEBIRD PARK has long been a favorite Laguna Beach play spot,
hosting activities as diverse as Music in the Park and kids play days.

Parks, like everything else, wear out. The City recently approved plans for the
renovation of Bluebird Park, including new, handicapped accessible restrooms and new play
equipment.

Unfortunately, due to severe budget constraints, the historic rocket ship, at a cost of
$120,000, was left out. At the Council budget hearing in May, I asked the city treasurer to
establish a rocket ship account in hopes that we can collect enough in private donations to
replace this Laguna icon. There have already been several donations to this fund.

To make your donation to the rocket ship fund, please send your check payable to “City of
Laguna Beach,” 305 Forest Avenue, Laguna Beach, Ca. 92651, and mark it “Rocket Ship
Fund.” This donation is 100 percent deductible on your income tax as a charitable
contribution. If not enough money is collected, your contribution will be refunded.

EMORIAL DAY honors our veterans and gives us an
opportunity to think about our past.
The PancakeBreakfastsponsored annually by the VeteransofForeign Warswas
a sell out at Heisler Park. Our firemen really know how to cook!

After the breakfast, fallen veterans were honored in an impressive ceremony.
